Modern non-sports trading cards often feature cartoons, comic book characters, or television series. They can also be associated with trading card games. Duel Masters Trading Card The Duel Masters Trading Card Game is a two-player collectible card game (CCG) jointly developed by Wizards of the Coast, Shogakukan, and Mitsui & Co., Ltd.. The card game is part of the Duel Masters franchise. It was released in Japan in May of 2002, where it quickly became the number one selling trading card game for over a year. Due to this popularity, it was released in the United States on March 5, 2004, where it has also done well. The game shares several similarities with Magic: The Gathering, the world's first collectible card game which was first published by Wizards in 1993. In fact, "duelmaster" was originally intended as an alternative tradename for Magic: The Gathering. As in Magic: The Gathering, Duel Masters players summon creatures and cast spells using mana. Key differences include the fact that all creatures and spells can act as mana producers, creatures cannot block attacking creatures without having the "blocker" ability, and that creatures only have one "power" statistic. Furthermore, duelists have shields in the form of cards that go to their hand when "broken" as opposed to Magic's "life points". Whether this will be the norm remains to be seen, since Wizards of the Coast may add new rules and card types to increase the game's longevity. Harry Potter There's something magical about Harry. This magic has very little to do with the fictional magic that Scottish author J.K. Rowling has woven into her four books to date. For the last couple of decades or so, parents have been scratching their heads in concern and sometimes real fear while their offspring gave hour upon hour first to television, then video and computer games and, more recently, the Internet. Hours that added up to weeks and, over time, to years of slack-jawed passive entertainment while technological marvels shoveled up activities that required little creative input from the growing young mind in question. With the popularity of the Harry Potter movies and books came Harry Potter trading cards. He is rejected by humans because of his demon side, and looked down upon by demons as a 'filthy hanyou', because of his human blood supposedly tainting his superior demon blood. "Spectre" was a lovely idea that could have made a great series, since its format allowed the inclusion of most major horror fiction, even including H.P. Lovecraft's "elder gods." It starred Robert Culp and Gig Young, and is a *FUN* movie, if you ever get a chance to see it. I believe it would have gone series, if made in the last few years, but at the end of the Nixon era, horror, even humorous horror, was unacceptable fare to the majority of TV watchers. ("Spectre" deals with an occult investigator and his M.D. sidekick, who keep getting involved with nasty superbeings from other times and dimensions; the hero's housekeeper is a witch, and puts a no-drinking geas on the alcoholic M.D. sidekick in the opening scenes.) Since Star Trek was undoubtely the most watched science fiction show in TV history, there is no surprise that there would be Star Trek trading cards.
